Having grown up, played, and enjoyed himself there, former professional baseball player Sean Burroughs saw his professional growth and development at Stearns Champions Park in Long Beach, California. However, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office reports that it also tragically observed his death, which transpired on Thursday, May 9, after 5 p.m.
Tragically, Burroughs passed away in the park’s parking lot while serving as an assistant coach for a Little League team from Long Beach that included Knox, his six-year-old son. The park was the scene of an emergency call involving a person experiencing cardiac arrest, thus the Long Beach Fire Department responded.
“We tried everything to save his life, but we couldn’t,” stated Brian Fisk, the public information officer. After a necropsy was conducted on his body, Burroughs was pronounced dead at the site, however the exact cause of death remains unknown. In a statement, Long Beach Little League president Doug Wittman said, “It is with great regret that I write this message to inform you that one of our coaches, Sean Burroughs, passed away tragically yesterday afternoon.”
Burroughs, 43, won the Little League World Series twice, competed for the United States and won the gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics under Tom Lasorda’s coaching. His brief major league career, which lasted from 1998 to 2005, was ended by drug usage. Burroughs’ Big League career began when the San Diego Padres selected him with the ninth choice in the first round of the 1998 MLB draft. While playing for the Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Minnesota Twins on the road, he hit.278 with 12 round-trippers and 143 RBIs.
